Who We Are

BlackStock Vineyards and Winery was started in 1997 by David Harris and Trish Harris. David is a wine professional with a viticulture and enology degree from Fresno State University and over 20 years experience in the eastern wine industry. As a winemaker, David received the first Gold Medals ever awarded for a Georgia-grown Vinifera with an ‘89 Chardonnay, the first Georgia-grown Red Vinifera with a ’92 Merlot, and the first “Best Southeastern Wine” Award given to a Georgia wine with a ’92 Chardonnay. In the 1993 International Wine Summit Competition, Georgia wines received a total of 11 medals, and David had produced nine of those wines. David has the background and dedication to truly emphasize “growing wine” and not just the production of grapes.

The Harris' have three children, Austin, Chandler and Eliza, for which the award winning ACE-A Family Reserve is named.

The Vineyard Site

Blackstock Vineyards sits atop a ridge at 1,700-foot elevation in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia on a 90-acre property. 24,000 Vinifera vines populate exceptionally well-drained granitic-based Terra Rossa hillsides with excellent air flow dynamics. The property site was selected as the result of a multi-year analysis of soil, climate, and topography. Vineyards range up to 20 and 30 % slopes yielding exceptional exceptional drainage, balanced vines, and premium quality fruit.

The Varieties

BlackStock Vineyard grows Merlot, Viognier, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga, Sangiovese, and Mourvedre. This make-up represents 70% red varieties and 30% white varieties. BSV features the second largest planting of Viognier on the East Coast, and the largest plantings of Touriga, Sangiovese, Mourvedre and Viognier in the state.

Planting Scheme

In the vineyard, a high density planting utilizes specialized narrow equipment producing optimum “per acre” productivity while allowing a low “per vine” production. Our trellis is adapted from the Open Lyre system developed by Dr. Alain Carbonneau of Bordeaux, which further improves air ventilation and exposure to the sun and other fruit ripening factors. Our viticultural recommendations have been adapted by several other vineyards in the region and have formed the basis of what is now considered the “new and improved” Georgia Wine Country.

Blackstock employs “sustainable” farming practices in the vineyard which puts an emphasis on preventative measures and low-impact farming to preserve the integrity of the environment, the topography and the soil.
